International students who apply for the optional practical training (OPT) extension should be trained under a legitimate employer, who is eligible to sign the Form I-983, “Training Plan for STEM OPT Students.” The students who completed their education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Graduation are eligible to apply for OPT extension.
The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify employment eligibility program of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and provide the students with proper training and learning objectives.
Students can also undergo OPT training at a startup business, if the business is enrolled in USCIS’s E-Verify program.
STEM OPT applicants can’t provide the employer attestation (like – signatures) on the Form I-983 on their own behalf. The STEM OPT employer has to sign on the Form I-983.
